Aunt Dorothy Gebhart Kirkpatrick was in the hospital delivering her son Te rry on December 16, 1946. She was waiting for her uncle Lewis Gebha rt to show up. When Lew walked in with Georgie Kirkpatrick, George's moth er and Aunt Dot's mother-in-law--she asked what took them so long and th ey replied that they had gotten married before coming to hospital. Aunt D ot didn't know that they were dating--only that they had gone to a coup le of concerts together. That is how her uncle became her step-father-in- law. Charles and Leta moved to Kansas City , Kansas and located in Argentine near to the home of Charles' sister Elva and her family . Charles worked for a rock crusher about one block from his sister's home. During the time that they were living in Argentine their second child, Stanley Charles was born. Mildred, their first child was born at the home of Charles's parents, near Lacey, OK.
Later, Charles bought property near 14th Street and Steel Road and started to build their home. Charles was a carpenter and was able to do most of the work himself. When their home was at least livable but not finished the family moved into it. Leta was a wonderful mother and housekeeper. She sacrificed for her children. Charles worked hard at the rock crusher and later changed jobs moving to another rock crusher in another part of Kansas City, Ks.
Leta did beautiful handwork, tatted all kinds of doilies, table covers and a variety of other types of items. She also could sew and made clothing for the two children. She was a good cook and canned many vegetables and fruits for the family.
One day in the spring of the year Leta took a cold. There had been considerable cold rainey weather and it was difficult to heat the house because it was not completely finished. Leta became more ill but continued to care for the children never going to bed. One afternoon, Elva, found out that Leta was ill and went to see about her. She called the Doctor as Leta had difficulty breathing. Doctor Haas was Elva's doctor and went to the home immediately. However Leta was in such serious condition that he could not do anything at that time. In fact, Leta was almost dead when Dr. Haas arrived and expired in a few minutes. Dr. Haas diagnosed her condition as pneumonia.
Leta's death was very difficult for Charley. He made arrangements for her body to be prepared for burial in Oklahoma. The Simmons Funeral Home in the Argentine section of Kansas City, Ks. took care of the arrangements.
Charles took the two children to his parents home on the farm near Lacey, Ok. and had the funeral in Waukomis, Ok. where Leta's family lived. She is buried in Waulomis Cemetery.
Charles, returned to Kansas City, Ks. and lived with Douglas, Elva, and Olive Maxine for a period of time while he took care of selling his house and property and other business. Later he returned to his parents home, worked on the farm, assisted in the care of his two children until his secod marriage about seven years later. | Family: F8950

John (Dutchy) Doherty was driving the wedding party out of town with a grey team of horses owned by Little Barney Doherty. Attendants were Pat McDevitt and Nora Doherty (Blackhorse). They stopped on the Northern Pacific railroad track as the train came along. A cowboy put a rope on the horses to try and get them to move. The train snuffed, puffed and blew off steam but the horses didn't move. People brought their chairs out on their porches to watch. The spectators got cold and had to put their sweaters on. They finally got the horses to move and drove to Middle Ranch (Pat Doherty's place) where they had a dance in the barn. | Family: F397
